Melatonin is a biogenic amine that is found in animals, plants and microbes. Aaron B. Lerner of Yale University is credited for naming the hormone and for defining its chemical structure in 1958. In mammals, melatonin is produced by the pineal gland. The pineal gland is small endocrine gland, about the size of a rice grain and shaped like a pine cone (hence the name), that is located in the center of the brain (rostro-dorsal to the superior colliculus) but outside the blood-brain barrier. The secretion of melatonin increases in darkness and decreases during exposure to light, thereby regulating the circadian rhythms of several biological functions, including the sleep-wake cycle. In particular, melatonin regulates the sleep-wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature. Melatonin is also implicated in the regulation of mood, learning and memory, immune activity, dreaming, fertility and reproduction. Melatonin is also an effective antioxidant. Most of the actions of melatonin are mediated through the binding and activation of melatonin receptors. Mariano Bizzari is one of those oncologists that had the misfortune of having cancer, I was fortunate to meet him. He is responsible for the Systems Biology Group of the Department of Experimental Medicine of the La Sapienza University of Rome, author of various studies on the antitumor properties of Melatonin (agreed in terms of the position of Di Bella – father and son - and of Paolo Lissoni, "one does not cure a tumor without melatonin"), and does not only see the four walls of his laboratory, but also the sick!

In order to address the choices of his Policlinical collegues: "We always give melatonin in high doses to patients together with radio and chemotherapy. It is a molecule with multiple properties, we define it as pleiotrofica because it acts in basis of the needs of the organism!".

Mariano Bizzarri has published various works on the antitumor properties of melatonin. Here he shows the killer effect on breast, prostate, colon, sarcomic, melanomic, and blood cancers ("Molecular mechanisms of the pro-apoptotic actions of melatonin in cancer: a review", see below).

We look to him and Professor Giulio Bellipanni, a surgeon in Rome that studies the pineal gland, both to have confermation of the capacity of contrasting the cancer that has this molecule (something that is not recognized in either basic medicine or by oncologists), and to understand why, from the beginning of the year, to acquire 2mg of melatonin one needs a medical prescription, while to buy 1000 mg of paracetamol (acetaminophen or APAP) does not require any prescription!

In practice it was patented by the company Big Pharma as a natural substance, something that should not need permission.

The patent of the 2mg pills was authorized in England. The English could have kept the drug like their stance of driving on the left, up to the decision of others, but the interest of Big Pharma is to get more clients, and earn as much as possible. In this way the price, from one month to the next, grew by 10 times.

"At the end of January, for a package of melatonin with 3 mg pills, I spent 7 euro, today it would be 70 euro in exchange for 2 mg pills", calculates Giulio Bellipanni.

But the worst part is that "...after the European registration, Italy approved the new pharmaceutical patent without asking about the Pharmacokinetic studies – probably missing – and has given indications on the limit of melatonin to insert in integrals of no more than a milligram!".

Q: What are the Pharmacokinetic studies? It is explained by Oncologist Mariano Bizzari.

A: "Two milligrams is a ridiculous dose with fresh water. It is a legalized joke, scientific fraud. The Pharmacokinetic studies explain the effects of such a quantity in the blood. The physiological values of melatonin in a man that weighs 70 kilograms are 8 mg. What does 2 mg of melatonin do?".

"We have been asking to be able to talk with the minister or representative that has put the pills new entry into the market at a raised price for months. No one ever answered. We do not want to believe that the ministries ISS and Aifa did not evaluate the studies and they accepted Circadin only to show favor to a business, thus we wait in anticipation of their response!".

Q: Professor Bizzarri, how do you explain this scientific fraud?

A: "Because of the ignorance and close-minded mentality. In the past the oncologist Paolo Lissoni and other researchers never had funds to finance their studies on melatonin because of the fact that it is a natural substance. Today a company has been created that is able to patent such a small dosage. Parliament should explain it...!".

Bellipanni is equally disconcerted: "It is the fruit of a well organized multinational effort and the damage to the consumers is not made known to anybody. In terms of melatonin, instead of moving forward, thanks to the push of studies, is moving backwards!".

Q: Professor Bizzarri, what are the principal effects of melatonin?

A: "It has many functions, it reduces free radicals, regulates sleepiness and mood, it prevents cancers, improves cerebral circulation, it is given to babies born prematurely and to those who suffer from mental retardation, it increases the number of blood platelets, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease!".

Q: With what dosages?

A: "As a preventative you can calculate it based on one mg for every ten kilograms of body weight plus another milligram. A man of 70 kilograms should take 8mg per day. In the case of cancer the dosages increase, for cerebral lesions the effects are proportionate to the quantity.".

Q: Can you use melatonin with other substances?

A: "Yes, with adenosine because it facilitates the absorption. Melatonin dissolves into the fat membranes.".

Q: Between all his works one appeared in the Journal of Pineal Research in 2011 that shows evidence of the the anti-cancer synergy of Melatonin and Vitamin D3 ("Melatonin and vitamin D3 synergistically down-regulate Akt and MDM2 leading to TGFβ-1-dependent growth inhibition of breast cancer cells",see below).

A: "Yes, a study on the lines of breast and colon cellular cancers: the action of Melatonin is made even more potent with the use of Vitamin D3, with the two substances, taken separately, cellular death is shown to be in the range of 45-50% of the cells, with both together it comes to 90% apoptosis. Still in regards to breast cancers, we have discovered that melatonin inhibits a molecule (MDM2) that favors the "resistance" of cancer cells.".

It was, instead, Giulio Bellipanni who researched the effects of melatonin on women on menopause, "in some of them the menstrual cycle returned, regulated by the pineal gland, letting the hormones of the thyroid flow and begin to function again uninhibited.".

And to think that they still have not taken from the classroom of gynecologist Rossella Nappi who recommends TOS (Substitutive Hormonal Therapy) to women on menopause, "even if the collateral effects could provoke breast cancer!". Words (unconsciously) hers sponsor Big Pharma...

As you can see, it all hangs together!

But who will bring this fraud to light? Who will open an inquiry? Will there be a parliamentary interrogation?
