Chemoprevention of Mammary Cancer by Retinoids

Abstract

Chemoprevention of cancer centers on the early stages of the carcinogenic process.

Chemopreventive agents as opposed to chemotherapeutic agents should either 1) inhibit or prevent initiation, 2) arrest or prevent the progression of premalignant cells, or 3) delay or prevent the development of invasive, malignant disease.

Since, for the most part, initiation in the human population is unknown, chemoprevention studies in experimental animals have focused on the latter two processes.

For an agent to achieve a chemopreventive role, it should enhance the physiological processes that protect the organism against the growth of abnormal cells with a potential of developing into an invasive cancer.
